While sitting in my office on the second floor in the dead of winter staring out the window at the snow covered roof top, my mind started to drift towards gardening. When spring arrived a door from my office to the large flat roof was added. A deck was put down and planter boxes and pots were filled with flowers, shrubs and small trees. This was the start of 2nd Floor Garden.
When retail space opened up on the ground floor, I decided to expand. Located adjacent to the Elmira Gift Outlet, 2nd Floor Garden along with two other retailers - Martha’s Mixes and Gramma B’s Craft Den were added. We have renamed our shopping area as The Shops at Roxton and offer a one stop shopping experience. The building is also gaining popularity in the artist community. We have added a potter and a painter and interest is growing. In the future studio tours will be among the points of interest.
The Roxton Building is a historic furniture factory. The Shops at Roxton are located in a section of the building built in 1903 and manufactured furniture under the name of The Elmira Furniture Factory. In 1907 an addition was added on. Some time later on the factory changed hands and became Beaucraft. In the 1960’s the factory was purchased by Roxton Furniture. Roxton had been manufacturing furniture in Quebec since 1893 and decided to expand to Ontario. The building was expanded to the present day of 100,000 square feet. Although Roxton Furniture no longer manufactures furniture they have retained possession of the building. Today, the building has been divided into offices, warehousing, hobby woodworkers, retail and even a piano refurbisher.
